Sports Leaders UK Awards

Sports Leaders UK’s awards have been designed for use in a variety of different delivery settings, including schools, uniformed organisations, sports and community groups.

The awards are tailored to respond to the individual needs of each organisation and its sports leaders, through a flexible and varied programme.  A great way of using sports to develop a set of life skills and empowerment that can be taken forward as they grow.

There are courses tailored for all age groups!

The building blocks of sports leadership can be introduced as early as nine years of age with the Playmaker Award, with courses leading to the Go Lead Award for the sixteen and older. There’s even a Women, Get Set, Go Award tailored to the specific needs of girls and younger women.

PlayMaker Award

The PlayMaker Award is a great introduction into leadership for pupils or students aged nine and over.

The award is designed for use in variety of education settings as a one day course and focuses on developing learners leadership skills.

  • Recommended age: 9+

Women, Get Set, Go!

Women, Get Set, Go! is a personal development programme that has been specifically designed for women and girls (14 years and over).

The course encourages women and girls to communicate with confidence, value their own skills, understand how the world of sport and leadership works, and to develop a personal action plan for their future involvement in sports leadership.

  • Recommended age: Women and girls aged 14+
  • Course length: 15 hours

Young Leader Award

The Young Leader Award is a great introduction into leadership, giving pupils and students knowledge of how to organise and lead small games and activities that can be used as part of uniformed organisation, community club or sports club sessions.

The Young Leader Award aims to help learners develop leadership skills such as organisation, communication and teamwork, as well as helping to build confidence and self-esteem as they take on responsibility of leading their peers and younger children.

  • Recommended age: 11+
  • Course length: 10 hours

Go Lead

Go Lead has been designed as an introduction to leadership that will give learners:

  1. A new understanding of how they can use leadership skills in their day-to-day work or college lives.
  2. The knowledge, skills and competencies to lead basic physical activity sessions under direct supervision.
  • Recommended age: 16+
  • Course length: 7 hours

I Can Lead

A fun practical training course that can be completed in class, on the sports field or as an after school activity.

I Can Lead has been designed as an introduction to leadership that will give learners the knowledge and skills to assist in leading basic sports/activity sessions under direct supervision.

NGB Leadership Awards

Sports Leaders UK has teamed up with various National Governing Bodies (NGBs) of sport to create a suite of sports specific leadership awards.

The NGB Leadership Awards put basic leadership skills, such as communication and organisation, into a sports specific context with the aim of training young people so that they can lead others in a sport of their choice.

  • Recommended age: 13+
  • Course length: 6 hours

Qualifications

Sports Leaders UK acts as an Awarding Organisation providing nationally recognised qualifications that equip people with the skills and motivation to create and run sporting activities.

Sports Leaders UK can now present its qualifications in a way that is easy to understand and measure, as achievement is recognised through the award of credit for units and qualifications.

Level 1 Award in Sports Leadership

The Level 1 Award in Sports Leadership provides the ideal starting point for learners aged 13 years and over who wish to develop their leadership skills, whilst under the direct supervision of their Tutor/Assessor or other suitably qualified adult.

The syllabus is designed to develop generic leadership skills that can be applied to a variety of sports and/or recreational situations as well as contributing to the personal development of the learner.

  • Age: 13+
  • Guided learning hours: 33 hours (including one hour demonstration of leadership)

Level 1 Award in Sports Leadership – individual booking

Level 1 Award in Sports Volunteering

The Level 1 Award in Sports Volunteering provides the ideal starting point for learners aged 13 years and over who wish to develop their volunteering skills, whilst under the direct supervision of their Tutor/Assessor or other suitably qualified adult.

The syllabus is designed to develop generic volunteering skills that can be applied to a variety of sports and/or recreational situations as well as contributing to the personal development of the learner.

  • Age: 13+
  • Guided learning hours: 28 hours (including five hours of volunteering)

Level 2 Award in Sports Leadership

The Level 2 Award in Sports Leadership will give learners the chance to develop their organisation, motivation and communication skills, whilst also focusing on positive role models in sport, how to mentor others, and how to use leadership skills in a variety of settings.

Learners may have already gained their Level 1 Award in Sports Leadership or this may be their first step onto the volunteering pathway.

  • Age: 14+
  • Guided learning hours: 39 hours (including 10 hours demonstration of leadership)

Level 2 Award in Community Sports Leadership

The Level 2 Award in Community Sports Leadership is a nationally recognised qualification that enables successful learners to lead groups of people in sport/activity, under indirect supervision.

The qualification teaches generic leadership skills such as organisation, planning, communication and teamwork through the medium of sport.

  • Age: 16+
  • Guided learning hours: 42 hours (including 10 hours demonstration of leadership)

Level 2 Award in Community Sports Leadership – individual booking

Level 2 Award in Community Sports Volunteering

The Level 2 Award in Community Sports Volunteering is a nationally recognised qualification for learners who are aged 16 years and over and who wish to develop their volunteering skills.

The aim of the qualification is to prepare learners for volunteering, giving the learner the skills required to help within a volunteer workforce. The learner is assessed on their understanding and their ability to carry out a volunteer role within a sporting and/or recreational activity.

  • Age: 16+
  • Guided learning hours: 40 hours (including ten hours of volunteering)

Level 3 Certificate in Higher Sports Leadership

The Level 3 Certificate in Higher Sports Leadership is a nationally recognised qualification that enables successful learners to lead unsupervised groups of people in sport and recreational activities. This qualification builds upon the skills and experience gained through the Level 2 Award in Community Sports Leadership and the Level 2 Award in Sports Leadership.

The qualification teaches generic leadership skills such as organisation, planning, communication and teamwork through the medium of sport.

  • Age: 16+ (learners can be 17 years of age on completion but can only lead under indirect supervision. They can only lead independently from 18)
  • Guided learning hours: 107 hours (including 30 hours demonstration of leadership)
